Mother's Day is the perfect opportunity to step outside and enjoy the beauty of nature together

In the Illawarra region, renowned for its lush landscapes and stunning coastlines, you can find a variety of outdoor activities that promise a memorable day for Mum. From the heights of the Illawarra Fly Treetop Adventures to the serene beaches of Kiama, and the beauty of Bowral, there’s something to delight every Mum.

Illawarra Fly Treetop Adventures

Start your Mother's Day with a breath-taking experience at the Illawarra Fly Treetop Adventures. Located just outside of Robertson, this is one of Australia’s premier Treetop Walk experiences. The 1.5 km return walk features a 500-metre long, 25-metre high elevated walkway that provides stunning panoramic views of the rainforest canopy and the Pacific Ocean. For the more adventurous Mums, the Zipline Tour offers an exhilarating ride through the treetops, complete with suspension bridges and multiple ziplines.

Coastal Charm of Kiama

For a more relaxed pace, head to the picturesque town of Kiama, known for its famous blowhole, historic lighthouse, and beautiful beaches. You can take a leisurely stroll around Kiama Harbour, enjoy a picnic by the lighthouse, or simply soak in the sun at Surf Beach. Kiama’s coastal walk is also a must-do, offering scenic trails that boast views of rugged cliffs, ocean sprays, and tranquil coves, perfect for nature-loving Mums.

Find Yourself in the Southern Highlands

Bowral, located in the picturesque Southern Highlands of New South Wales, is a charming town celebrated for its delightful outdoor pursuits, art galleries, exquisite dining options, and shopping venues. With its stunning gardens, pleasant parks, and scenic walking trails ideal for both sightseeing and unwinding, the town is a haven for all who appreciate the great outdoors.

If you’re planning a trip to Bowral we definitely recommend including some of these great places in your daily itinerary:

Corbett Gardens is located within the Bowral town centre. It boasts a wide range of springtime bulbs, tulips, trees and shrubs. It's also open all year round. And if gardens and nature are your thing then we also recommend visiting the Southern Highlands Botanic Garden. Home to 22 types of silver bird trees, eastern spinebills, and crab apples, to mention a few, this garden is located 4.5 kilometres southeast of Bowral and is a beautiful place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

If Art and Books is more your thing then Bowral will definitely not disappoint. Here you will find the Ngununggula, Southern Highlands Regional Gallery, the first art gallery in the region offering rich artistic expressions. The gallery is open daily from 10 am to 4pm. There is also the  Bowral Art Gallery which is one of the oldest art museums and workshops in the Southern Highlands. It displays various works of art throughout the year and is open from 10 am to 4 pm.

Last, and certainly not least is their famous bookstore "Books Ever After" which is the only speciality bookstore in NSW.

After you’ve ‘found yourself’ in any of the many parks and been inspired by the art and literature of the area, unwind with a beautiful lunch in one of the many cafes and restaurants in the area. And don’t forget to spoil yourself with something sweet from Bowral’s famous bakery Gumnut Patisserie before you head back home.

Wollongong’s Beachside Beauty

No visit to the Illawarra region would be complete without exploring Wollongong. This vibrant city offers beautiful beaches, botanical gardens, and a plethora of cafes and restaurants along the seafront. Take a bike ride on the Wollongong to Thirroul Bike Track, which runs along the stunning coastline providing views that make any day special. Later, treat Mum to a delicious lunch at a beachfront cafe, followed by a leisurely walk on the sand at North Wollongong Beach.
